چکیده

In simulating two-phase flows, interface normal vectors and curvatures are needed for modeling surface tension. In the traditional approach, these quantities are calculated from the spatial derivatives of a scalar function (e.g. the volume-offluid or the level set function) at any instant in time. The orders of accuracy of normals and curvatures calculated from these functions are studied. A new method for calculating these quantities is then presented, where the interface unit normals are advected along with whatever function represents the interface, and curvatures are calculated directly from these advected normals. To illustrate this new approach, the volume-of-fluid method is used to represent the interface and the advected normals are used for interface reconstruction. The accuracy and performance of the new method are demonstrated via test cases with prescribed velocity fields. The results are compared with those of traditional approaches. 2007 Elsevier Inc. A New Method for Calculating Interface Normal Vectors and Curvatures when Modelling Free-Surface Flows

In simulating free-surface flows, the interface normal vectors and curvature are needed for modelling surface tension e↵ects. We present a new method for accurately calculating these quantities. In this method, an entirely di↵erent approach is taken, compared to common methods where normals and curvature are obtained from the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) or Level Set (LS) functions. In this fixed-grid...

A volume-of-fluid interfacial flow solver with advected normals

We presented a new approach to calculating normal vectors to fluid interfaces in [JCP, 226:774–797, 2007 ], by advecting unit normals along with an interface. In this paper, we introduce an implementation of the method in an interfacial flow solver. The advected normals are used to compute the interface curvature for calculating the surface tension force, and for reconstructing the interface in...

Improved Normals and Curvatures From 2D Volume Fractions

Among numerous methods for numerical simulation of two-phase flows, e.g. wave impact to marine vessels and ocean structures, the volume-of-fluid (VoF) method is one that can exactly preserve the volume of each phase [4, 5]. In the VoF method, the volume fraction f of one phase is considered as a reference, and defined in each cell as the ratio of the volume occupied by that phase to the total c...

A preconditioned solver for sharp resolution of multiphase flows at all Mach numbers

A preconditioned five-equation two-phase model coupled with an interface sharpening technique is introduced for simulation of a wide range of multiphase flows with both high and low Mach regimes. Harten-Lax-van Leer-Contact (HLLC) Riemann solver is implemented for solving the discretized equations while tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) interface sharpening method is applied ...

Velocity Modeling in a Vertical Transversely Isotropic Medium Using Zelt Method

In the present paper, the Zelt algorithm has been extended for ray tracing through an anisotropic model. In anisotropic media, the direction of the propagated energy generally differs from that of the plane-wave propagation. This makes velocity values to be varied in different directions. Therefore, velocity modeling in such media is completely different from that in an isotropic media. The vel...
